[Interview] YL Drops New Video for “Love Me”, Talks Upcoming Project & More I was introduced to YL’s music a few weeks back and I ….
Chicago is full of talented artists pumping out some of the world’s best music on a daily basis. The music scene is one of the best in the country and its impact has been clear with the rise of artists such as Chance the Rapper, Chief Keef, Mick Jenkins, Famous Dex, Vic Mensa and many others. While these artists have shown what Chicago is capable of, they are only the tip of the iceberg of the excellence Chicago holds. The city has literally hundreds of artists making quality music daily and the next wave out of Chicago is sure to solidify the Windy City as a hub for new hip hop talent. With the amount of great music to be found, it was hard to boil down this list to only 50 names and there’s many more artists also deserving of attention, but I had to stop somewhere. Check out the best the city has to offer below. Did I miss someone? Comment below to let me know! This list is in no particular order.
There are many talented artists in Chicago, but some simply shine through the crowd. Shepard Hues has the musical ability to get recognized among the pack and has recently started releasing some of the best music in the city. The producer/MC has teamed up with many well known artists including Supa Bwe and UG Vavy, the three of whom come together to form the group Fight Me, one of Chicago’s most elusive yet sought after ensembles. We got to interview him and ask him a little bit about his new tape, In Any Hue, what to expect from Fight Me and more. Check it out below.
Every once in a while I’ll hear just one song from an artist and know I’ll be listening to them for quite some time. Marko Stat$ had that effect on me when I first heard his track Jubilation and from that moment on I’ve been following his music and been wildly impressed. I recently featured him on Don’t Sleep Pt. 6 and was excited to get to interview him for this feature. His introspective yet often upbeat sound creates a thoughtful juxtaposition that is immediately ear catching but will also have listeners coming back and revisiting songs to really hear the message he’s providing. See what he had to say about his project BEE-4 I FLY AWAY, how Chicago has impacted his music, and who some of his influences are below.`
There are plenty of artists in Chicago making creative, innovative music but Seer is proving to be one of the city’s most imaginative musicians. His genre-less style incorporates a blend of oldies, pop, hip hop and really any sound that catches his ear, all coming together in a cohesive, ear catching way that highlights Seer’s ability to craft excellent music. While he just dropped his debut tape Secret 2 My Strut only a short time ago, Seer has been making waves for a while now producing for Decent Gang, one of Chicago’s most talented up and coming collectives, showing that the rest of the city is paying attention as well. We got to ask him about his recent tape, his work with Decent Gang and where his distinctive style comes from. Read more below.
Don’t Sleep is back. Our feature on some of the best local talent in Chicago has always showcased talented musicians on the rise, but the five artists on this list are some of our favorites to date. With a range of interesting sounds, Don’t Sleep Pt. 6 should have some music for everyone’s taste. From a skilled harpist to some oldies style sounds to some classic hip hop music, there really is an eclectic mix of music coming from this group and we’re excited to introduce you to some more of Chicago’s hidden gems. Get in tune with Marko Stat$, Swill, Jose Franco, Yomi, and Seer below.
Travis Hendriiix, formerly known as TKCS, is on a path of reinvention and innovation. As he looks to re-brand himself, Hendriiix has been making deliberate and thought out moves while also releasing some pretty solid music. Even though he only has two songs under his belt, it’s clear he has a vision for his sound and style. We got the chance to ask him some questions about this new look, what to expect in the future, and some of his inspirations (they’re probably not who you think). Read our latest Windy City Sounds interview below and get in tune with Travis Hendriiix.
